Archive 1999In September - The Tagore Centre UK and the Nehru Centre combined to present the Tagore-Yeats Memorial Lecture, delivered by Peter Cox at the Nehru Centre entitled The Tagore and Elmhurst Legacy. In July, visiting lecturer Leonard A Gordon, Professor of History, City University, New York, gave a lecture in the life and death of prominent Indian political activist Subhas Chandra Bose at the centre. June and July saw celebrations of Tagore take place on two occasions at the North West Community School – Tagore Night, part of the 1999 Arts Worldwide Bangladesh Festival, where members of the Youth Forum performed Tagore's dance drama Shyama and his song Touch My Heart with the Touchstone of Fire. Tagore's 138th birth anniversary was celebrated there too in June, where local artists gave performances of Tagore's drama and music. The second half featured prominent singer Alak Roy-Chowdhury with a fantastic performance of Rabindrasangeet. An exhibition on Tagore's life and works was exhibited to coincide with the performance |
