The Tagore Centre UK, in its 20th anniversary year, presented the UK-tour of the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company. Led by internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Tanusree Shankar and stemming from the family that brought contemporary Indian dance and music to the world, the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company is like no other dance troupe from India.

Their spectacular performances are magnificent, sublime, truly rare and unique, and they truly lived up to their reputation as they took their dance performance Chirantan - a tribute to Tagore, on a UK-wide tour to London, Glasgow, Kent, Durham and Birmingham.

Tanusree Shankar trained under Amala Shankar, wife of the legendary Uday Shankar, and has since developed a style of choreography developed from classical styles mixed with contemporary forms, stemming from the music composed by her husband the late Ananda Shankar, a composer who popularised world music with his unique and innovative style.

Tanusree, who married Ananda in 1974, is the principal choreographer for the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company and bases her compositions on the Shankar Technique of New Age Dance. Her lyrical grace and mobility are not shackled by the restraints of the conventional and the classical. The exotic, the ecstatic and the ethereal are her sources of inspiration.

Having choreographed numerous ballets as well as items for various conferences, festivals, major events, fashion shows and films, Tanusree has established herself as a leading choreographer with her dance troupe which she has toured extensively to more than 35 countries.

The tour and programme was supported by ICICI Bank, Visiting Arts, Awards for All and the Indian High Commission.
