Mamata Lahari is one of the most acclaimed Rabindrasangeet singers in London. She has a Diploma in Rabindrasangeet from the Nupur School of Rabindrasangeet and was taught by the esteemed singer Pampa Dhar. She will be accompanied by Sanjoy Dasgupta and Srabantike Dasgupta. Film screening: Gora (in Bengali)
A vintage and rare black and white production from 1938, Gora is based on Tagore’s novel of the same name, and features the man himself from the outset. The film also includes rare scenes from Bisnu Ghosh’s gymnasium, famous at the time in Kolkata.
Before the screening, Dr Bishnu P Choudhury will introduce and discuss some of the aspects of the film that makes it still so relevant today. Dr Choudhury is a retired medical academic, author, a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies.
Screenplay and directed by Naresh Mitra. Music by Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Lecture: Leftist Thought in Indian Cinema by Dr Lalit Mohan Joshi (in English).
Lalit Mohan Joshi is an Indian film critic and historian. He is also editor for the publication South Asian Cinema.
He has been a journalist with BBC Hindi Service for the last 20 years. His books Bollywood – Popular Indian Cinema (2002), A Door to Adoor (2006) and the documentary Beyond Partition (2006) have all won critical acclaim. Dr Joshi is currently the Director of London-based film organisation South Asian Cinema Foundation (SACF).

Poetry reading: Subhashree Roy (in Bengali)
Trained under the tutelage of Bratoti Bandhopadhaya, Subhashree has developed a unique style of bringing out the soul of each poem she recites. She has worked with All India Radio since 1991 in Yuvvani and also performed at the Doordarshan, Kolkata. She was previously a voiceover artist in India, and now recides in Bristol.
